ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY OR CHEMICAL EDUCATION
Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry position in the Lyman Briggs College (LBC), an undergraduate science and liberal arts community (http://lymanbriggs.msu.edu/). The candidate will be jointly appointed (75% Lyman Briggs and 25% in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, or Geological Sciences). We are searching for a creative and motivated individual to join the LBC Chemistry group. The successful candidate will teach introductory chemistry at LBC, including laboratories, and will develop upper level courses in their own area of expertise and interest. The ideal candidate should have disciplinary or pedagogical research interests complementary to those of faculty in one of the following MSU departments: Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (College of Engineering), Civil and Environmental Engineering (College of Engineering), or Geological Sciences (College of Natural Science). Ideal candidates will be broadly trained in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental engineering, environmental science, or geology and enthusiastic about joining the community of teaching-focused faculty within LBC. This position requires a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and offers exciting opportunities for candidates interested in teaching in a small, liberal-arts college environment with all of the resources provided by a large “Big 10” research university. Each candidate is also expected to pursue an active and externally funded research program that provides opportunities for undergraduates and possibly students working toward their M.S. or Ph.D. degrees within the joint disciplinary department. Requirements include a strong record of teaching and research, a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemistry Education, Engineering Education, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, or Geology; at least one year of postdoctoral experience is recommended.
Founded in 1967, LBC is a vibrant undergraduate, residential, liberal arts college at MSU focusing on the study of science and its interactions with society. The LBC curriculum integrates natural sciences and mathematics courses with courses in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. The LBC student body is 60% women and 20% students of color; also, 20% belong to MSU's Honors College. Faculty work closely with students in small classes and with student groups such as the Briggs Multi-cultural Alliance and Women in Science.
