Some years ago Science at the Edge hosted National Academy of Sciences member Prof. Michael Waterman of the University of Southern California at the time the John Kinney Memorial Lecture Endowment was being created (by John's daughter and son-in-law Lois and Larry Dimmett). Michael Waterman was a PhD student of John Kinney; he earned his PhD degree in Statistics and Probability in 1969. The attached announcement is the inaugural John Kinney Memorial Lecture, and will be given by Persi Diaconis of Stanford at 10:20 am on Thursday, August 29, in 1400 BPS. Dennis Gilliland
