It is my pleasure to inform you about a meeting on Regional Integration
and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which is being organized by UNCTAD's
Division on Investment and Enterprise in January. The meeting will be held
in Geneva from the 28th to the 30th of the month.
Regional and inter-regional economic integration efforts constitute an
important feature of today's economic landscape. These efforts can have
implications for countries to attract and benefit from FDI, including through
direct and indirect effects of trade and investment measures and market
integration. The meeting will build on the trade and investment nexus and
focus on the experience of long-established regional groups in order to
shed light on the relationship between regional integration and FDI flows;
and, additionally, what can be done to strengthen this relationship. In
particular, experts will examine the role of regional integration as a
determinant of FDI, as well as discuss the importance of economic and policy
fundamentals in promoting investment for sustainable development and inclusive
growth. The meeting will uniquely bring together experts and policymakers
from developing and developed regional and inter-regional groups to discuss
trends, developments and best practices in this regard.
