POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR IN DOMESTIC AND GLOBAL POVERTY AND IMPROVING HUMAN HEALTH University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Description: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (http://illinois.edu/) invites applicants for Associate or Full Professor as a part of a campus-level Strategic Excellence Hiring Program. Tens of millions of Americans have incomes below the poverty line. In 2010, about 15 percent of the population was poor with substantially higher rates in families with children. Despite years of economic growth, the extent of poverty is higher than in the 1970s. Globally, poverty remains one of the large challenges of this century, with the world's population estimated to reach 9 billion in a few decades. Being poor is associated with a myriad of problems including food insecurity, adverse childhood events, higher rates of chronic diseases, and lower levels of general well-being. Increasingly policy proposals for addressing poverty and inequality focus not only on government safety net proposals but on community-based solutions that may enhance opportunity as well. We are seeking a scholar with an innovative approach to poverty and inequality. With its inherently complex origins, antecedents, and outcomes spanning all realms of life from the economic to the social and cultural, poverty as a phenomenon can be studied through a variety of disciplinary lenses. As such, our search for the ideal candidate for this position will span multiple disciplinary backgrounds such as economics, business, social work, sociology or anthropology, with domestic or international foci, and include areas such as social entrepreneurship and social innovation. We are particularly interested in a scholar whose research agenda includes and emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department of Business (http://business.illinois.edu/ba ) within the College of Business and the School of Social Work (http://www.socialwork.illinois.edu/) are collaborating in the search process. These units have a strong record of excellence in teaching, research and outreach programs that focus on economic and social development. While the successful candidate will hold a tenured appointment in a 'home department' affiliated with one of these units, the intent of the position is to identify someone who can integrate across disciplines. Both communities have recently made substantial investments in new public libraries, and the University of Illinois library is known as one of the country's best. Qualifications: Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate in the behavioral or social sciences or related field. A record of academic scholarship and teaching that meets the qualifications for the rank of associate or full professor at the University of Illinois is required. Candidates must possess a commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration. Desired qualifications include: a recognized national and international scholarly reputation; leadership and/or administrative experience; the ability to advance interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives; and attention to the implications of the research to public policy and the improvement of communities locally and globally; and a record of successful funding from public or private sources.
