Freie Universität Berlin is seeking to fill three junior professorship positions (W 1) for its newly established
Graduate School of East Asian Studies:
Department of History and Cultural Studies
Seminar of East Asian Studies
Successful applicants will be required to conduct research and teach in the corresponding areas.
Appointment requirements are governed by article 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).
1. Junior Professorship in Japanese Studies (with a focus on Japanese Society)
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in university teaching and research, preferably with a strong international
component. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies with an emphasis on the social sciences or in a social science discipline such as sociology, social and cultural anthropology, political science or a related discipline with a distinct focus on Japan.
Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in qualitative research methods, an excellent command of English and Japanese, as well as substantial research experience related to institutions in Japanese society. Qualified candidates will also show a track
record of engaging in multi-disciplinary research and teaching as well as in conducting grant-sponsored research.
The appointee will be expected to conduct research and to teach courses in social science research on Japan within the Graduate
School of East Asian Studies and in the B.A. and M.A. programs in Japanese Studies. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to Freie Universität Berlin’s research networks in the social sciences and area studies, such as those represented in
the Center for Area Studies.
2. Junior Professorship in Chinese Studies (with a focus on Chinese Economy and Society)
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in university teaching and research, preferably with a strong international
component. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies with an emphasis on the social sciences or in a social science discipline such as economics, sociology or a related discipline with a distinct focus on China. Applicants should have demonstrated expertise
in qualitative research methods, an excellent command of English and Chinese, as well as substantial research experience related to institutions in Chinese economy and/or society. Qualified candidates will also show a track record of engaging in multi-disciplinary
research and teaching as well as in conducting grant-sponsored research.
The appointee will be expected to conduct research and to teach courses in social science research on China within the Graduate
School of East Asian Studies and in the B.A. and M.A. programs in Chinese Studies. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to Freie Universität Berlin’s research networks in the social sciences and area studies, such as those represented in
the Center for Area Studies.
3. Junior Professorship in Korean Studies (with a focus on Korean Politics)
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in university teaching and research, preferably with a strong international
component. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Korean Studies with an emphasis on the social sciences or in a social science discipline such as political science, sociology or a related discipline with a distinct focus on Korea. Research expertise related to North
Korea is especially welcome. Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in qualitative research methods, an excellent command of English and Korean, as well as substantial research experience related to institutions in Korean politics and society. Qualified
candidates also show a track record of engaging in multi-disciplinary research and teaching as well as in conducting grant-sponsored research.
The appointee will be expected to conduct research and to teach courses in social science research on Korea within the Graduate
School of East Asian Studies and in the B.A. and M.A. programs in Korean Studies. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to Freie Universität Berlin’s research networks in the social sciences and area studies, such as those represented in
the Center for Area Studies.
Languages of instruction at the Graduate School of East Asian Studies are English and German. Successful applicants who are not
sufficiently proficient in German are strongly encouraged to acquire language skills at academically appropriate levels within a reasonable time frame.
Junior professors will be appointed as civil servants for an initial duration of three years. Provided that their performance
is thereafter evaluated positively, employment may be extended for three more years.
