Sustainability:  The most well-adopted and most often quoted definition of sustainability is that of Brundtland Commission (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987, p. 8):  “development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”  Included within this broad rubric of sustainability are such issues as: understanding the environmental impact of economic activity in both developing and industrialized economies; ensuring that basic human needs are met; and assuring the conservation of non-renewable resources. Unfortunately, this macro-economic, societal definition of sustainability is difficult for organizations to apply and provides little guidance regarding how organizations might identify future versus present needs, determine the technologies and resources required to meet those needs, and understand how to effectively balance organizational responsibilities to multiple stakeholders such as shareholders, employees, other organizations in the supply chain, and broader stakeholders including society and the natural environment (Reuter, et al., 2010).  With this special issue, we seek to encourage scholars to examine topics such as these as well as other, related topics by submitting manuscripts that are theoretical,  empirical and/or offer  insightful for practitioners.

Notes for Intending Authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.  All papers are referred through a peer review process.  A guide for authors, sample copies and other relevant information for submitting papers are available on the Papers Submission section under Author Guidelines.
