Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning
Invitation and Call for Contributions
40th Annual Conference: March 6-8, 2013
[Paper Submission due date: November 2, 2012]
ABSEL will celebrate its 40th Anniversary meeting in the city of its birthplace, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA from March 6-8, 2013.
Join the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL) for a very special time in March 2013 as ABSEL celebrates its 40th anniversary in the city of its birthplace: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Come alongside ABSEL members, to include some who have attended ABSEL for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and yes, even 40 consecutive years to explore business simulations, games and other forms of experiential learning.
ABSEL invites participation from everyone interested in experiential and innovative learning methods including both experienced and new academicians, students, and business professionals. We welcome quantitative and qualitative research, theoretical models, empirical research, literature reviews, cases, demonstrations, games, exercises, simulations, proposals for round table and panel discussions, and other work related to creative or innovative teaching and learning methods. Student and business professional participation in ABSEL is highly encouraged.
Simulations: focuses on the development, application, assessment, and research associated with business simulations and gaming.
Experiential: focuses on the development, application, assessment, and research associated with interactive, experiential learning exercises.
Experiential Student Sessions: This year ABSEL invites undergraduate and graduate student submissions, either conceptual or research papers, for consideration in the Experiential track. Students are encouraged to co-author, collaborate and/or receive other guidance from faculty members, but the student(s) should retain first-author status. Students will present in special student sessions at the 40th annual conference.
Innovations and Future Directions in Education: focuses on developments in education that reflect new educational and/or technological innovations. Examples are distance education, online/web-based learning, use of social media, the use of new internet and hardware technologies, etc.
Games Ready to Play: This track will allow conferences attendees to actually participate in Simulations that can be completed within a two-hour time frame.
Assessment of Learning: focuses on development, application and research related to assessment of learning issues. This track has a broad focus, allowing for examination of everything from classroom techniques to matters of accreditation.
Issues Relevant to ABSEL Scholarship: focuses on topical issues of interest to ABSEL scholars. This Track is appropriate for timely, provocative or stimulating essays. The Issues Track also can be a good fit for ABSEL-related discourse that does not necessarily fit into the Simulation or Experiential Learning categories. For example, the history of and future directions for ABSEL, or generalities/particulars from the 39 years worth of research papers published in the Bernie Keys Library. Contributions from attendees of the first-ever and early ABSEL conferences are particularly encouraged.
Note: ABSEL, going into its 41st year, will continue to focus on Business Simulations and Experiential Learning, as its very name implies. However, much has changed in the last 40 years, and ABSEL’s mission should reflect those changes. Therefore, three new Tracks (Innovations, Assessment and Relevant Issues) are being added to the 2013 meeting as formats to expand the breadth and depth of ABSEL scholarship and to attract new ABSEL scholars interested in these topic areas.
