Rich, In the tri-county area (Ingham, Eaton, Clinton), 211 is a short code for the United Way. It may be assigned to other organizations on other areas (local regulatory board can assign this number to any organization they wish). You can dial it from most land-line phones in the area (this includes subscribers of AT&T landlines and Frontier). Cellular carriers often do not use the same short codes as land-line phones. On campus, we only support two short-codes -- 911 for emergencies and 711 for assisted technology dialing (TTY/TDD). Most other community codes overlap our phone number range. On campus, we also stopped supporting 411, and instead encourage users to dial 0 for operator assisted calls. Each call to 411 (or 555-1212 for that matter) costs the university at least $1.50 for the call. Local news media advertises the number 211 for finding cooling centers (and other services) in the Lansing area. 211 is apparently like the old 411 number some of us may remember. Does the number 211 work on campus? Do you have to dial a prefix? (If I dial 211 on my AT&T cell phone, I get a voice notice that the call cannot be connected. It appears from net searches that 211 may be tied to the United Way.. Is 211 official or not? I am retired from MSU and do not have a campus phone.) /rich
