The Pacific Asian Consortium for International Business Education and
Research (PACIBER) (http://paciber.org) is offering a Faculty Development
Workshop preceding the annual PACIBER meeting, held on the island of Kauai,
Hawaii, at the Sheraton Kauai Resort on July 6, 2012, from 8:30 am to 5:00
pm.

 

The workshop, facilitated by Catherine Welch (University of Sydney) and Dan
Caprar (University of New South Wales), and organized in collaboration with
Universidad EAFIT (Colombia), will focus on practical advice for conducting
and publishing qualitative research in IB, with particular focus on case
studies and ethnography.

Facilitator bios:

 

Catherine Welch is an Associate Professor in International Business at the
University of Sydney. She has a longstanding interest in qualitative
research methods, and at the moment her research lies in applying process
approaches to the study of firm internationalization. Together with Rebecca
Piekkari, she has edited two volumes on qualitative research published by
Edward Elgar: Handbook of Qualitative Research Methods for International
Business (2004) and Rethinking the Case Study in International Business and
Management Research (2011). She has published on numerous aspects of doing
qualitative research, including interviewing, writing up and the case study.
She and her co-authors have published their methodological work in
International Business Review, Journal of International Business Studies,
Industrial Marketing Management, Management International Review and
Organizational Research Methods.

  

Dan Caprar is a Lecturer at the Australian School of Business, University of
New South Wales. He received his MBA and a PhD from the University of Iowa
in the United States, and Australia is the fourth country he has lived and
worked in, after Romania, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Dan's
research focus is on the interaction between business and its socio-cultural
context, with particular interest in the impact of foreign business on local
cultures. Dan's most recent work was published in the Journal of
International Business Studies, in a special issue showcasing the use of
qualitative methods in international business. He recently joined the
Editorial Board for the Journal of International Business Studies and is a
member of the Research Committee for the Academy of Management's
International Management Division.
