While I agree with you completely, the SAP stuff is made for the big
fat corporate world, where nothing changes except when there is a
case to be made for it, and then everything moves in concert.

This model does tend to make for a great attack surface, but at
least they know that X works with Y and Z!

But yeah, making code that is browser specific is really bad.
When people say that isn't avoidable I point them to msu.edu
which is a great example of things that are cross-browser useful.
