A Theory of Asian Management versus an Asian Theory of Management

The Asia Academy of Management invites papers for its eighth conference. The theme of the conference is ‘A Theory of Asian Management versus an Asian Theory of Management’. In specific, we hope to explore the question of, ‘What are the unique contributions that Asian Management can make to advance the field of management, which has been heavily influenced by Western theories and practices?’

With a collection of many different countries that exhibit distinctive backgrounds in culture, society and institutional development, indigenous Asian Management research holds great promise for extending existing theories and developing new theories that are grounded in an Asian context. However, Asian management scholars face two different approaches for indigenous research: one approach is to develop a theory of Asian management that extends and modifies Western theories to Asian contexts, while the other approach is to develop a unique Asian theory of management that addresses specific issues in Asia, about Asia, and for Asia.

We see pros and cons to each of these two approaches. We open up these issues for scholarly debate at the Eighth Asia Academy of Management conference. We welcome research in one or both approaches. More specifically, issues related to the broad theme of the conference include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  *   What are the similarities and differences between Western and Asian Contexts for theory development?
  *   What are the traditional wisdoms and new Asian business practices that inform theory-building?
  *   What are the challenges and opportunities for conducting indigenous research in Asia?
  *   What are the similarities and differences for micro-level issues such as leadership and emotion in organizations situated in Western or Asian contexts?
  *   How is entrepreneurship in Asia different from that in the US and Europe, in both research and practice?
  *   What are the unique attributes of family business in Asian contexts?
  *   How do firms in Asia develop network ties or Guanxi with stakeholders and what might be the unique implications of these ties for research on entrepreneurship, innovation and firm performance?
  *   How do business groups in Asia, such as Chaebol and Keiretsu, demonstrate distinct strategic implications, especially in this time of substantive economic shifts?
  *   What are the emerging challenges for Asian management practices and research?

The conference program will consist of keynote speeches, competitive paper sessions and interactive poster sessions. All competitive paper submissions and interactive poster session submissions will be competitively reviewed.


Please upload your paper submissions using the online system ( during the April 1 to May 31, 2012 period.


  *   Although submissions relating to the major theme of the conference are encouraged, papers can deal with other issues that relate to the topic of Asian management systems and strategies of Asian firms. The papers may be grounded in any major management discipline including business strategy, organizational behavior and organizational theory, human resource management, international management, and ethics and social issues in management. Conceptual, theory-building, or empirical papers from the above disciplines are welcome.

  *   All submissions must be original and should not have been previously accepted for publication in a journal, presented in another conference or be under review at another conference. All submissions should also follow the ethical code of AAOM. Please find related resources at AAOM website.

  *   All papers will be blind reviewed. The Program Chair will assign accepted papers to paper or interactive paper sessions. Papers presented at the conference will be published in the CD proceedings of the conference.

  *   Papers should be prepared and presented in English. There is no page limit, but contributors are encouraged to limit their paper to less than or equal to 20 pages (A4 paper, font 12, double spacing with margins of 1 inch) inclusive of the cover page, abstract, text, references, table and figures. The format follows the Academy of Management style.

  *   As least one of the authors must register for the conference before the deadline of conference registration, and attend and present the paper in the conference. Otherwise, the paper will not be included in the conference program and proceedings. If absence from a scheduled meeting is unavoidable, participants must contact the AAoM Secretariat as early as possible and pursue suitable alternative arrangements.

  *   To ensure a broad participation of members, we require that no one submits or be associated with more than 3 paper submissions.

  *   Manuscripts prepared in Microsoft Word should be submitted online. Please do not send submissions directly to track chairs. Please indicate the appropriate track at which you wish your paper to be reviewed, during the online paper submission.

The conference will start with a reception in the evening of December 10 (Monday), followed by two full days of program events, on December 11 and 12.


Participants can fly directly into Seoul Incheon International Airport. More information on transportation options from Incheon to the conference venue will be provided on the AAoM website.

Registration fees:

Early bird fee: US$ 350, which includes a two-year complimentary AAoM, full membership and a subscription to the Asia Pacific Journal of Management. Doctoral students and participants from low-income countries can apply for reduced fees.

Related Activities:

Doctoral Consortium
The Asia Academy will also organize a doctoral consortium at the Korea University Business School. The consortium will consist of a panel of experts in management research who will speak on doing research and managing academic careers. Doctoral students in the dissertation stage are encouraged to apply. Details of the application process will be announced later.
