EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT (EJIM) PROUDLY PRESENTS
ITS SECOND ANNUAL Scholar-Practitioner Forum

TITLE:  Emerging Markets: Economic Imperatives & Societal Needs

PRIMARY SPONSOR: INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT DIVISION

ABSTRACT: When Goldman Sachs published its Economic Report No. 99 titled
“Dreaming with BRICs: The Path to 2050” in 2003, emerging markets stepped into
the limelight. To many, the report’s positive outlook for Brazil, Russia, India
and China has veiled the fact that emerging economies are more than just markets
with significant growth opportunities. In fact, entering emerging markets is a
multi-faceted and challenging endeavor. Usually, the political, economic,
societal and legal environments in emerging markets require a complete
adaptation of existing business models, and often the interests of emerging
markets for development are detrimental to the business interests of entering
companies. The Forum addresses the question of how conflicting interests can be
bridged successfully and sustainably. The Forum therefore has two main
objectives. The first is to promote the study of emerging markets and how
companies from developed, industrialized nations conduct business in emerging
markets. The presenters will explore the idiosyncrasies of emerging markets and
of doing business in emerging markets, and they will discuss pathways towards
mutual success. The second objective is to provide a platform for thought
leaders from academia and industry to discuss such research issues and interact
with members of the Academy of Management.  The invited speakers are all
prominent academic researchers and/or practitioners who have great insights to
share about the topic of emerging markets.
