I'm not sure now if there is a problem with using @msu.edu as a backup email address. I definitely have it and I can still sign in with the gmail account. Several coworkers have it and haven't gotten notices. One says he called AIS and they said this is NOT affecting the "backup email address" feature.

Ok, this is the thing that I was wondering about specifically. Leo, can you chip in and confirm that this statement is correct? Because I'm guessing that this particular situation is probably pretty common (after all, I'm guessing a fair number of people, especially professors, used their msu email address as their backup email address for their gmail account, and some of these people may not *have* another email address to use to change it to, so I can see this being something of an issue).I thought I remembered seeing something about a setting you can turn on to have two google accounts open in different windows of the same browser? Can't remember it off the top of my head. I have to admit, I generally resort to two different browsers most of the time I need to do this.
It also means that if you want to access your personal calendar/gmail
account and your MSU Google docs account, you will need two separate
browsers (or some tricks like multiple profiles in the same browser, but
that's still two windows). That's probably going to be the biggest
nuisance out of all of this for me.

The Google apps works like this (As far as I know.)
Google gives MSU some special software to run on MSU's servers. It
is still tied into Googles main database but the files are held on
MSU servers (I'm assuming here). Google is now only allowing 1 email
address to be in its database's at any time. So MSU is saying thatgetting all the msu.edu <http://msu.edu> addresses to tie into their
version of Google. This means that if I went to Google.com and
created a personal account and had my personal files, calendaring,
etc on this account that it will need to be changed because MSU isthat is using the email address *.msu.edu <http://msu.edu> then they
version of Google.
Basically if someone has a personal Google account on Google.com517-355-0364 <tel:517-355-0364>
will need to change the email address tied to that account to have
access to it.
Hope that makes more sense. And if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will
correct me soon enough.

Subject: [MSUNAG] question about the google apps transition thing
Ok, I've been getting several questions from my users about this, and I
just want to make sure that what I'm passing on to them is correct. As
far as I can tell from reading what was mailed out, as long as people
are not using their msu email address to log into their current google
account, they should be ok. Any idea if that's correct? I know my
average users are finding it particularly difficult to interpret what
was sent out, and quite frankly, I've read the document several times
and *I'm* not positive I've got it figured out.
Also, any idea when information about this was first sent out? The
first I heard about it was 3 days ago, but I don't think I remember
having seen anything sent to me about it, so I don't know if it started
before that. 3 days in the middle of the summer seems a little on the
short side to me.
Thanks,
Gary
