hi folks,

With both the GSA and AGU abstract deadlines coming up (July 26 and
August 4, respectively), I am writing to invite you to submit
abstracts for two sessions I am co-convening:

1. At GSA, T167. Time, Events, and Places: Understanding Temporal and
Spatial Learning in Geoscience Education
National Association of Geoscience Teachers; Spatial Intelligence and
Learning Center
Thomas Shipley, Steven Semken, Carol J. Ormand
Students have trouble learning about and reasoning with large temporal
and spatial scales. This session will present geoscience education and
cognitive science research on spatial and temporal thinking to offer
possible ways to improve learning.

2. At AGU, ED16: Cognition and Learning in Geoscience Education
Carol Ormand (SERC, Carleton College) and Timothy Slater (University
of Wyoming)
Cognitive science as a discipline stands poised to make a difference
in real world applications. This session highlights attempts to
understand the ways in which cognitive science theories manifest
themselves in the teaching and learning of the geosciences, and the
ways in which those theories can be used to improve geosciences
education. Theoretical and applied submissions related to cognitive
science research (i.e.: cognitive load, spatial reasoning,
visualization, affect, social discourse, place-based learning, novice
vs. expert problem solving, conceptual change, metacognition) are
encouraged, including proposals related to the empirical testing of
science curricula that have been modified according to core cognitive
science principles.

All the best,
Carol
