Dear GeoEd research community! Josh Caulkins and I will be convening the following topical session at the upcoming GSA Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. A significant amount of new work is being done to understand how people think, work, and learn in field-based environments, and we look forward to hearing the latest results from our community in this session. T173. Geocognition Research in Field-Based Environments GSA Geoscience Education Division; National Association of Geoscience Teachers Eric M. Riggs This session focuses on empirical research in cognition and learning sciences applied to the geosciences in field environments, including navigation, decision making and problem solving, visualization, and the nature of expertise. Please also note that there is a companion session to this, convened by Sheldon Turner, that covers geocognition in other learning environments: T172. Geocognition Research in Classroom, Laboratory, and Informal Environments GSA Geoscience Education Division; National Association of Geoscience Teachers Sheldon P. Turner This session focuses on empirical research in cognition and learning sciences applied to the geosciences in laboratory, classroom, and informal environments, including visualization, problem solving, conceptual understanding, and the nature of expertise. Sheldon (and co-conveners) will I'm sure send out an announcement of their own soon, but we'd encourage groups who are running coupled field and classroom based geocognition research to contribute to both sessions! Note, the abstract deadline is July 26, 2011, right around the corner especially with field season upon us! Please join us in Minneapolis! See you there!
