Contextualizing Top Management Teams

Top managers are considered the most influential decision-makers for firms’ strategy and a large body of research presents evidence for executive effects in different settings. Yet only recently have researchers started to pay attention to the role of the social and environmental contexts in which top management teams (TMTs) are embedded. Top executives are often informed, influenced, and sometimes constrained by others both inside and outside the organization. As a result, upper echelons face diverse challenges and opportunities when operating in a variety of different contexts. Contextual factors at the team, organizational, industry and country level are considered not only important determinants of executive composition but also moderating forces shaping the consequences of executive characteristics for firm strategy and performance. In addition, the extent to which top managers matter and exert an influence on their firms differ with national level institutional settings and there is an increased interest in the cross-national variation in executive effects.  

This special issue aims to advance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the interplay between top management teams and different layers of context as well as the dynamic interactions between the contexts and firm strategies (such as international and business strategies). We encourage in particular new theoretical and empirical approaches that introduce a more European perspective. At the same time, we welcome papers from authors from all over the world. We invite submissions that discuss implications for international management in Europe and beyond. The following list is indicative of the types of contributions which may be appropriate. However it is not intended to be exhaustive and rather is illustrative:


Subject Coverage

  1. Literature reviews and state-of-the-art papers, which will encourage the debate about the role of context in top management team research and discuss theoretical and empirical challenges for future TMT research.
  2. Conceptual papers focusing on the special theme “Top Management Teams & Business Strategy: Contextualizing TMTs”. We particularly welcome papers that use an interdisciplinary approach and combine different theoretical perspectives to explain the impact of contextual factors on the antecedents and consequences of TMT strategic behavior.
  3. Empirical papers contextualizing different TMT research topics, such as: the role of social, organizational, national, global and environmental contexts on TMT motivational and cognitive bases; TMT dynamics and behavior; interactions and power relations between TMT and other stakeholders; executive compensation, turnover and succession; among others.

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Below is a brief bio of each co-editor:

Sibel Yamak is professor of management at Galatasaray University. She has a doctorate in Organisation Theory from Bosphorous University. Her publications focus on business elites, top management teams, governance and corporate social performance. In 2007, she received Emerald LiteratiNetwork award. She was a visiting scholar in different universities such as the Panthéon Sorbonne University, Strasbourg Louis Pasteur University, Manouba University, Manchester University among others. She is a member of the editorial board of British Journal of Management and Society and Business Review. She has co-chaired Business elites and top management teams sub-track and Corporate Governance track at the European Academy of Management. She has been an Executive Committee member of the Academy of Management MED Division (USA) since 1999, as Country Liaison, International Membership Coordinator, Division Research Coordinator Elect, and Division Research Coordinator.

Sabina Nielsen is assistant professor at the Department of International Economics and Management, Copenhagen Business School and University of Technology Sydney, Australia. She received her Ph.D. from University of St. Gallen, Switzerland and was a visiting scholar at University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Her dissertation won the European International Business Academy (EIBA) best dissertation proposal award in 2003 and was nominated for the Barry Richman Best Dissertation Award at the Academy of Management (AOM) in Philadelphia, USA and the Gunnar Hedlund Best Dissertation Award at the EIBA in Catania, Italy in 2007. Her research has been published in international scholarly journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, Strategic Organization, Management International Review, Journal of World Business etc. and in Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business and the European Academy of Management. Her research interests include the composition, dynamics and decision-making of top management teams and boards of directors. Dr. Nielsen has co-chaired the Business Elites and Top Management Teams subtrack at the European Academy of Management since 2008.

Alessandro Minichilli is assistant professor of corporate governance at Bocconi University in Milan, where he received his Ph.D. in 2004. He has worked as visiting scholar at Wharton Business School in Philadelphia, and is currently visiting professor at IESE Business School. His research interests are in the area of boards and governance and top management teams, with a specific focus on family businesses. His research has been published in international journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Corporate Governance: an International Review and British Journal of Management, and in Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management and the European Academy of Management (Euram). He is member of the Editorial Review Board of the Family Business Review, and ad-hoc Reviewer for several leading international journals. Recently, he has co-chaired together with Alejandro Escriba-Esteve the first EIASM international workshop on top management teams, which was held in Valencia, March 2010.

Alejandro Escriba-Esteve is associate professor of strategic management at the University of Valencia and he has worked as a visiting professor at HEC Montreal (Canada). He received his Ph.D. in management from the University of Valencia in 1999, and his current research is focused on the impact of TMT on firms’ strategic orientation and strategic choices, with special attention to strategic entrepreneurship, strategic alliances and internationalization. He has published his work in international peer reviewed journals such as British Journal of Management, International Small Business Journal, International Marketing Review, Management International, and Journal of Knowledge Management. He is member of the Board of EURAM since 2009 as well as member of the Board of ACEDE (Scientific Association of Economy and Business Management) since 2008. Prof. Escribá-Esteve has participated as co-chair of the TMT subtrack at the European Academy of Management during the last two years. Recently, he has also co-chaired the first EIASM international Workshop on Top Management Teams & Business Strategy.
