We’ve seen this for years. We’re not having an outbreak of the problem as you are now. It just happens sporadically across our machines. Perhaps one per month or two on average. 90% of the time, just a reboot fixes the problem.

Ours are domain accounts, not roaming.

These are all local.  Some are domain accounts, but are not set to roaming.  Others are completely local machine accounts.

Are these local profiles, roming profiles, or a combination there in?

Subject: [MSUNAG] Windows profiles not loading... epidemic....

In the last week and a half, I have had 8 machines start having issues loading user profiles correctly.  They are a combination of XP and Windows 7.  Machines will just start saying something about not being able to load the user profile, a temporary one is being used, and any changes will be erased when you log out.

No rhyme, no reason.  All antivirus software is up to date.  Full scans of the machines provide no hint of virus or malware.

Sometimes after 3 or 4 tries, they get in just fine.  Other times, I have to fiddle with registry entries for the profile in order to get them to load correctly.  Once I get a profile to load correctly, it appears to be fixed.

There HAS to be something going on out there, but I can’t seem to locate the common denominator.  I’ve seen this maybe 3 times in the last 5 years on campus.  Now, 8 times in a week and a half?  Anyone have any ideas, other than a general “bad update” that could be causing the problem?  Or is anyone else seeing this?  If it was a bad update, you’d think it’d be more than just me.

Thanks!
