Interactive Tool: Adults with College Degrees in the US
 

This interactive tool allows you to see the percentage of adults with bach

elor's degrees in the United States by county, but also allows you to compare the data historically (1940-present) and highlights data in counties that are urban or have high concentrations of racial minorities.

Center for Student Opportunity - Guide to the Guide

Guide to the Guide is a free companion to the 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide, offering counselors, teachers and mentors a set of activities designed to help you and the students you serve make the most of this important college guide book. The student activities are based on the KnowHow2GO 4 Steps and adult activities are based on the KnowHow2GO mentor workbook. Visit

Planning and Startup Grants
Planning and Startup grants are available to build up the organizations and programs that put college in reach for more Michigan youth. Generous funding from The Kresge Foundation has created a series of college access program grant opportunities, including funds for planning, program startup and program excellence.

If you submitted an Intent to Apply form, this is a reminder that proposal submissions are due tomorrow, February 4, by 5:00 pm.
 

  • Planning Grants: Are awarded to facilitate the initial process to develop a community-based local college access network. A one-time grant of up to $8,000 is available to cover the costs associated with determining a community's college access needs and designing an implementation plan for starting a college access network.
  • Startup Grants: Are awarded to support new community-based local college access networks. Subject to the availability of funds, up to $50,000 is available to assist with the direct program costs of a new local college access network. Startup Grants may not be used for scholarships, and the grant period is 12 months.

Michigan Campus Compact, in partnership with MCAN, have announced a grand opportunity for LCANs and their higher education partners to fund College Positive Volunteerism strategies within your communities. Lake Trust Professional Development Award Program

 

Lake Trust Credit Union is committed to supporting financial education and college access efforts in Michigan schools. The Lake Trust Professional Development Award was established to provide financial assistance resources to Michigan educators for out of classroom/school professional development opportunities such as  workshops, association conferences and training.

Community Organizing Essential to Long-Term Education Reform, Report Finds

Community organizing plays an important role in maintaining the momentum of school and district reform efforts and sustaining improvements over the long term, a new report commissioned by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation finds.


Based on a review of case studies, regional and national scans of the field, and an analysis of how community organizing has affected education policy, school capacity, and student outcomes and prepared by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, the report, The Strengths & Challenges of Community Organizing as an Education Reform Strategy (35 pages, PDF), found that by leveraging the collective power of parents, youth, residents and institutions, community organizing can alter longstanding power imbalances and patters of inequality that result in failing schools.

"Current federal policies encourage states to create standards and assessments to measure student learning and create a series of rewards and sanctions for schools that fail to show growth," said co-authors Michelle Renee and Sara McAlister. "Although this approach focuses on holding students accountable for learning and teachers for teaching, it does not address the lack of resources or the conditions students need in order to learn."
