GUEST EDITORIAL
(Mohamed Amal, Goran Svensson)

Among the emerging economies, Brazil has been playing a growing role not only in Latin America but also on a global level increasing its participation in world trade and international flows of investments. This special issue brings together, on an international scale, research on the “business model” of Brazil and other “business models” in Latin America.

This special issue consists of a selection of distinguished contributions as follows.

The first paper is entitled “International co-operation of Ibero-American countries in business administration and economics research: presence in high impact journals”. It is co-authored by Guillermo Cardoza (Instituto De Empresa Business School, Spain) and Gaston Fornes (University of Bristol, UK and ESIC Business and Marketing School, Spain). This article analyses patterns of international co-operation in economics and management research between Ibero-American countries and between these countries and the USA and Europe.

The second paper is entitled “Brazil-focused publications in leading business journals”. It is authored by Somnath Lahiri (Illinois State University, USA). This article studies conduct an overview of Brazil-focused publications that appeared in leading business journals between 1990 and 2008 by highlighting and ranking contributions of individual authors and their affiliating institutions, summarizing types of research, research topics and theoretical perspectives, analyzing citations received by different articles and developing agenda for future research.

The third paper is entitled “Determinants of corporate debt maturity in Latin America”. It is authored by Paulo Renato Soares Terra (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). This article tests the main theories of corporate debt maturity in a multi-country framework, in an attempt to understand country-specific constraints.

The fourth paper is entitled “Understanding how the strategy formation process interacts with the management of complex work”. It is co-authored by Rosalia Aldraci Barbosa Lavarda (Universidade Regional de Blumenau, Brazil), MaríaTeresa Canet Giner and Fernando Peris Bonet (both Universitat de València, Spain). This article analyses how the strategy formation process takes place studying the relevance of the integrative perspective and the use of the variables rationality, implication and vision; And, verifying the relationship between an integrative strategy formation process and the management of work and the consequences of this relationship in terms of performance.

The fifth paper is entitled “Evaluation of competitiveness in ceramic industrial districts in Brazil”. It is co-authored by Valmir Emil Hoffmann (Universidade de Brasília, Brazil), F. Xavier Molina-Morales and M. Teresa Martínez-Fernández (both Universitat Jaume I – Castellón, Spain). In this article, the competitiveness of the Brazilian ceramic tile industry is evaluated using a conceptual model that we developed which integrates two contemporary approaches: industrial districts and the resource-based view.

The sixth paper is entitled “Development of non-local competences in foreign subsidiaries of Brazilian multinationals”. It is authored by Felipe Mendes Borini (Escola Superior de Propaganda E Marketing, Brazil) and Maria Tereza Leme Fleury (FGV-EAESP, Brazil). This article focuses on whether factors responsible for the existence of non-local competences in emerging multinationals are different from those of traditional multinationals.

The seventh paper is entitled “Impact of globalization: less developed countries’ (LDCs) firms ability to cope with opportunities and challenges”. It is co-authored by Gabriel Baffour Awuah (Halmstad University, Sweden) and Mohamed Amal (Universidade Regional de Blumenau – FURB, Brazil). This article contributes to the debate on the impact of globalization on competitiveness of firms in LDCs.

We wish that you – the reader of European Business Review – will find the seven contribution of this special issue of great intellectual interest and stimulation. We also hope that both scholars and practitioners will find them valuable.
