Dear Colleagues,

We would very much like to see you at the next Reading IB conference - we are extending the deadline, in case you are still interested in submitting a paper!

As you know, our focus tends to be on the conceptual rather than the empirical, and this this year's theme is built around  understanding – and possibly bridging – the increasingly tenuous and fraying link between empirical and theoretical research in IB. We deliberately seek to advance the understanding of IB as a broad and multidisciplinary subject by examining and internalising empirical and conceptual observations from related fields with a view to enriching IB theory.  Everything is based around a series of structured open debates on specific themes.   We have done this twice, and included panellists such as Peter Buckley, Tatjana Kostova, Ravi Ramamurti, Alain Verbeke, Rob van Tulder, Steve Tallman, Ram Mudambi, Mike Kotaabe, Bernard Yeung, amongst others.

1.      The conference will be structured around four open-ended debates with an explicit focus on conceptual and theoretical developments.  Debate sessions are intended to maximise participation from the floor, with the four invited panellists speaking for no longer than 5 minutes each.  This year's panellists include: Invited Speakers include:  Geoffrey Jones (Harvard), John Cantwell (Rutgers), Lorraine Eden (Texas A&M), John Hagedoorn (Maastricht), Suma Athreye (Brunel), Peter Buckley (Leeds), Nigel Driffield (Aston), Klaus Meyer (Bath).

2.      Participants will be selected in a deliberate attempt to bring the best established scholars, and the most promising up-and-coming young researchers in this field to evaluate future directions.

3.      The debate sessions will be supplemented by a two-hour poster sessions on both days. These do not necessarily need to be on the theme of the conference, but from any area of IB.

4.      As a new initiative we plan to have Parallel Sessions which relate to the specific themes (below), and be substantially complete papers that can be considered for potential publication immediately after the conference. We are seeking to arrange various publication possibilities.

The final deadline for submitting has been extended  31 January 2011.  You do not need to have a paper to register - the deadline for registration is 11 February 2011. Attendance will be limited to 150 participants, so early registration is advised.

This year’s themes are

·         Entrepreneurship and IB

·         Subsidiaries and the MNE

·         Externalities and the MNE

·         Strategic alliances and IB
