Called 5-1723 this morning.  I was able to confirm the following:

 

1.)    Electronic media is not shredded on campus; it is taken to a third party facility for destruction

2.)    They do use the exact same containers as for confidential documents, just don’t mix paper and media in the same bin

3.)    Media can be taken in directly at any time and requested to be destroyed, if you are comfortable without a locked container

4.)    They are looking at possibly buying a shredder now that they are in the new building

 

So, call 5-1723 if you want to receive a container.

It is the same exact container.  I did, however, find some notes from when I set this up, and I was told that they do accept and destroy electronic media, they just use the same container.  I tried to call an confirm this, but it’s 4pm and the office is closed.  I will call them tomorrow and confirm.

 

I’m pretty this works; we’ve had the bin filled and emptied twice, and they didn’t complain about all the metallic paper…

BTW, the bin is about the size of a large granger trash bin, like you might have at home.  It has a lock on it and material to be destroyed is dropped in via a slot in the top.

 

Does it say anything about electronic media?  Because that sounds like their normal confidential recycling bin, which I thought was only for paper.

Interesting, because they definitely don't seem to list such a service on their website.  That's the type of thing I'd definitely be interested.  My original plan was to run a drill through them, but I've been piling up the number of drives that I wanted to do that to, and I'm probably looking at at least 50-60 now, probably more than that.  Some of the drives are good, some are bad, and I'm definitely not sitting around taking the time to wipe them with software.

Meanwhile, the pile will just grow bigger and bigger until I get around to doing something with them :).

Is there a degaussing station or hard drive shredder on campus? If not, how are you disposing of old drives? Wiping with a LiveCD? Drilling a hole through it?
