All NV 8600-series mobile GPUs, including the workstation models, have an on-die flaw that causes overheating and the eventual deterioration of the GPU package. That's the reason for the motherboard replacements as well as the fact that the recall covers multiple manufacturers - for example, Apple has been doing replacements on affected machines for two or three years now. Assuming you actually use your laptop, if it has one of the defective chips you can safely assume it will eventually fail and require replacement.
