Hello NAG,
     Thanks to everyone for your input.  I have contacted Dell support and 
they have agreed to replace the motherboard.   I just hope this is a 
permanent fix? But, Dr. Carter's comments about continuing problems aren't 
very reassuring.   (We are currently in the process of ordering a new XPS 
17" system right now??)
