I've used sharpies, just enough to label the CD/DVD with something,
and then more info on a label on the CD holder.  From what I've been
able to gather, black is best, and keeping the C/DVD in the dark means
that the light won't interact with the ink.  I think my oldest CDs are
8 years old; the last time I read one it was OK.
