Running a GroupWise cluster v7.0.3 on SLES10SP3 (OES2) over here, and getting ready to upgrade that to v8.0.1 in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah this was an interesting Topic last summer and fall, but there were some issues with security/privacy with Google apps for business use. We have three mail platforms on the campus that Eudora, Exchange, and MSU.EDU mail system. You will find lots of posts from all types of user classes on the topic.
I am very sad you were in previous environments where the MS Exchange architecture was not robust, or maintained properly. The major merit for using your own mail server is the ability to provide a secure environment that is tangible and worked by trained and enthusiastic mail administrators for delivery, troubleshooting, and recovery.
I use Gmail personally and can see where small units, budget constrained business, low sensitivity transmissions groups, and other community based groups could benefit. However we have started looking as a large community focus to find a responsive powerful option with calendaring but have a little more discussion to have. LOL.

Hi all,
I'm new to the list and a user (not an IT pro), and apologies if this has been
discussed before on MSUNAG, but I'm really interested to know why the university
doesn't plan to use gmail. It seems like the privacy and ownership issues would
be overcome with the advent of google docs. So, what's the difference with
storing potentially private data through gmail vs. docs in the cloud? Reason I'm
asking, exchange is awful and bulky (in my opinion), often slow and often has
errors. Either through app/vpn or exchange web access it's a pain to use outside
of university grounds. If we don't fully commit to google apps then people won't
transition, they'll just stick with their old programs. Plus, aren't we increasing the
IT burden by having to maintain two systems (training on both systems, hardware
on exchange server, etc.?) When I heard that we were using google docs I was
excited, but the lack of gmail is a real disappointment. I'll look in the archives to
see what's been discussed about this, but I guess I was wondering if others had
the same opinion.
