I'll second the R-Studio option. 
I used it against a drive that had already been rejected by a data
recovery service. 
I only got ten gig off the drive, but that was better than nothing.

I've had good luck with R-Studio
(http://www.data-recovery-software.net/) for
badly mangled disks.  Their $80 version is fine when you have a computer
that
you devote to the task, and can hook the damaged disk directly up.  So
far,
its the best tool that I've found, for general case problems.
