1. Envirothon is hosting the first annual Michigan Sustainable Stoup
Competition.

October 25, 2009 the Michigan Envirothon will be hosting the first annual
Michigan Sustainable Stoup Competition, in Grand Ledge, MI.

This will be a fundraiser for the Michigan Envriothon Program; Envirothon is
a non-profit statewide environmental competition that gives high school
students outdoor, hands on experience with nature, agriculture and the
ecology that surrounds it. These are the young adults who will be the next
scientist, foresters, wildlife biologists and farmers. For more information
on Envirothon and to learn how to get involved locally visit
www.mcihiganenvirothon.org.

What is sustainable stoup? It is a soup or a stew that individuals (using a
commercial kitchen) or restaurants create in with 75% of the ingredients
volume is from Michigan. The purpose is to broaden awareness and support for
locally raised food and encourage individuals to grow their own food in
their backyard or find a nearly farm, CSA or farmer’s market where they can
buy their produce and protein. Several different categories are given: 100%
local, allergen friendly, organic and vegetarian, however we are planning
one overall winner.

Samples from Michigan wineries and breweries and even a few hard cider
makers are along for the event to give everyone attending the full circle
Michigan experience. The goal is to promote sustainable agriculture,
farmers markets, backyard or community gardening and Michigan beverages.

If all of this peaks your interested, please contact Ginger Bardenhagen
using the information below if you would be interested in joining one of our
planning committees, helping us find sponsors including yourself or your
organizations, helping to market the even to potential competitors and
attendees, or donating a prize for our winners. The plan is to begin
advertising the event with the start of the Farmers Market season, using
posters and/or flyers at farmers markets, wineries and breweries, promoting
the event all season long. All donations to Michigan Envirothon are tax
deductible.
