Greetings,

If you know of any qualified Chemistry Educators, we are hoping
to have two positions available, perhaps starting as early as this Fall.

Please forward the announcement below to anyone who you think might be
interested.

I’d recommend that potential applicants contact the director of the Mallinson
Institute, Dr. Bill Cobern ([log in to unmask]
), before submitting their
materials, since the positions are not “official” yet.

CHEMICAL EDUCATORS

The Department of Chemistry at Western Michigan University invites
applications for two faculty tenure-track assistant professor positions with
teaching and research interest in chemical education.  The positions are
subject to budget approval and will commence in the Fall of 2009.

Preferred candidates will have a Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical education
with an emphasis on preparing undergraduate and graduate students to
cultivate strong technical skills and to bring creativity to instruction in
chemistry.  The candidates will be expected to: conduct high quality,
externally funded research programs with our faculty, all of whom lead
research programs with some emphasis in areas such as environmental
chemistry, nanoscience, biochemisty, as well as with the faculty of the
nationally ranked Mallinson Institute for Science Education
(www.wmich.edu/chemistry; www.wmich.edu/science/).  The candidates will also
be expected to teach in both the graduate and undergraduate education
programs, take the lead in the revitalization of our undergraduate
curriculum at the freshman/sophomore level, to supervise chemistry education
masters and doctoral students and to share the supervision and teaching of
chemistry for elementary teachers.

Both positions involve joint appointments to the Department of Chemistry and
the Mallinson Institute.  Although the job responsibilities will be shared,
one appointmee will officially focus on undergraduate chemistry and the
other on graduate chemistry education.  The working environment is highly
collegial with strong emphasis on cooperative research and development.
Salary and start-up funds are competitive.

Applicants should submit: their curriculum vitae, a list of four references,
brief statements of research and teaching interests to Chemical Educator

Michigan University, a student centered Research university, encourages
applications from underrepresented groups and is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
