I've never had a problem using POP on the iPhone. Though I use IMAP most of the time, I do use POP for one. The biggest thing is making sure that it uses SSL. In most cases with POP, it won't be able to detect the SSL connection, so it will set it up without, then you have to go back in and turn the SSL back on for it to work correctly.
