I have been using Softmaker Office with much success.
The current version is 2008 and includes support for
Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files. Versions are available
for Windows, Linux and FreeBSD .

That's something I'd be interested in, anyone out there using OpenOffice instead of Office?

It sounds to me like one more of those cases where you HAVE TO upgrade, even when you know that there is no direct benefit, but not to be left behind, because they decided to change a few basic things.

How about upgrading instead to something like OpenOffice, if it will handle the new Office 2007 file format?

The file format changes for one.  The free converter kits from Microsoft can patch Office 2003 so they open documents, but some templates don't work with the converters.  Also there is the issue of possible features that are lost in the conversion process.  I don't have any examples of what may or may not convert correctly, but I do know that even with the converters installed across the board here, they're not a guaranteed solution to avoid the upgrade.
