CAPUCHIN SOUP KITCHEN’S URBAN FARM ANNOUNCES HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

 

Detroit, MI (November 19, 2008) …The Capuchin Soup Kitchen and its urban garden ministry, Earthworks Urban Farm, will be hosting a holiday open house from December 1-19, 2008.  The open house will include the opportunity to learn about the work of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, including the opening of the ROPE bakery, to purchase socially conscious products of the soup kitchen and to tour the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and its Earthworks gardens.

 

The event will be held at the Meldrum Capuchin Soup Kitchen at 1264 Meldrum, Detroit 48207.  The open house will take place out of Earthworks workspace Monday through Friday from 9am until 4pm. 

 

Available products include local honey, jams made with Earthworks berries, handbalm made with the local beeswax, and more.  Honey will be available from the Earthworks’ honey bee hives located at their three garden sites on Detroit’s eastside as well as from the Capuchin’s Retreat Center in Washington, MI.  Volunteers at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen jammed nearly 1000 jars of black raspberry currant, gooseberry, elderberry, and grape jams this fall.  Please call ahead to confirm selection, as some varieties sell out early.  With these products, “we hope to give folks the opportunity to share Earthworks with friends and family and educate them on the work we do” says Patrick Crouch, Program Manager of Earthworks Urban Farm. 

 

“Buying locally produced and grown products helps builds strong communities”. Crouch continues.  In an effort to encourage their community to continue to buy local, all jars of jam and honey feature a $1 coupon on the lid for Grown in Detroit produce.  This coupon can be used to buy Detroit-grown vegetables and fruits at local seasonal farmers’ markets in 2009.

 

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s Earthworks Urban Farm works for a just, beautiful food system for all.  Its three city gardens yield over 6,000 pounds of produce each season, most of which goes into meals at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.  Earthworks educates the community in regards to sustainable relationships between human beings and the earth.

 

Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing food, clothing, and spiritual counsel to those in need.  Frequently preparing and serving 2,000 meals a day, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen also distributes household items and operates a shower program, food pantry, and children’s tutoring and art therapy program.
