Timo, I just realized I misstated something regarding the need to use the VPN and protocol filtering at the MSU network perimeter. My desktop machine has a static IP which allows me to connect from off campus (which is why I gave it a static IP). It looks like your server has a DHCP assigned IP. I believe you will need to establish a VPN connection before you can access the file share on a host with a dynamic IP. I also made the assumption that you wanted to connect to the Mac server from a Mac client. Upon more careful reading of your post I see that you don't specify this. Assuming you already have the server properly configured to allow connections from Windows clients then I think you should be able to connect from off campus using Windows file sharing just as you do on campus.
