The idea of a grand unified communication system sounds terrific. If
students and faculty had an all singing all dancing communication system
everything would just work. Everyone would just be connected. All
barriers would just fall.

What I see in the groups that I work with at MSU is that much of
people's communication needs are with non-MSU people. I believe that
most of the grand unified systems would have little impact on
communication with people outside MSU. Isn't this the case for many
organizations --- they may have a very tightly integrated internal
communication system, but it doesn't do much for external communications?

BTW, some of the the people I work with who have the greatest majority
of their communication with people outside MSU are grad students.

Much of MSU's impact on the world is based on external communications
(in many forms), and not internal electronic communication.

Cheers,
Tom
