  If you don't already have a copy, then you ought to
  read Naomi Oreskes' "The Rejection of Continental
  Drift: Theory and Practice in American Earth
  Science."  I'd also recommend Kitts' 1977 work, "The
  Structure of Geology," if you can find it.  Long out
  of print, used copies sell in the $60-80 range.
