Job Opening
Director
Science & Engineering Education Center

The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is conducting a search for a Director of its new Science and Engineering Education center.  This center will support a range of activities, including a significant community outreach program.  Many of its activities will involve a focus on the integrative aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through the use of project-based learning, with ancillary attention to systems and modeling.

The center's community outreach programs will involve K-12 students and teacher professional development, as well as further development of the close collaboration already in place between UTD and the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science.  The integrative STEM education and project-based learning aspects will also involve activities and coursework for UTD undergraduates.  The center will carry out all these programs in close collaboration with UTD's Science/Mathematics Education department, as well as with faculty and students from other departments in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and in the School of Engineering and Computer Science.  The Center will also be involved in joint research with the UTD Center for BrainHealth in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences on applications of cognitive neuroscience to STEM education.

The main responsibility of the Director will be to effectively utilize university resources and assets to develop sustainable community outreach programs which will enhance appreciation of, and interest in, the sciences and engineering, particularly among children.  For example, two key job duties will be to: (1) develop collaborations with area schools to bring programs such as robotics to area school children, and (2) work closely with the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science to further develop joint exhibit and activity programs with the Museum.  The Director will work with Prof. Russell Hulse, founder of the Center, to develop and implement the Center's programs, and will take a leadership role in associated education research, publications, and proposals for outside funding.

A Ph.D. in science, engineering, or science education is preferred, but highly qualified candidates without a Ph.D. will be considered on the basis of experience and capability.  This will be a full-time, 12 month staff position, with an anticipated starting date in the summer or fall of 2008.  Rank, salary, and starting date may be adjusted based on the successful candidate's qualifications and requirements.  Please submit a current c.v., statement of relevant experience, and 3 letters of reference at www.utdallasjobs.com. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Beth Keithly at 972-883-4568 or [log in to unmask].

The University of Texas at Dallas is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, citizenship status, Vietnam era or special disabled veteran's status, or sexual orientation.
