That worm was not uncommon to instances that were not kept updated.
That was a maintenance task. Many things have happened on this campus
that SHOULD not have happened at all, but don't blame the tools blame
the custodians.

Any way; I would really recommend a solution for wired desktops with a
server implementation of ISA 2006, you don't have to worry about
outdated firmware, Windows Update will bring you the patches, you have
phenomenal control of outgoing and incoming traffic, you have dashboards
and built in reporting to get you started. Protecting your resources is
a breeze once you have cleaned them up, put a good antivirus on the
client then put an ISA box in front.

For you Linux guys, there a quite a few open source style
firewall/proxies that you can implement so you don't have to keep up
with chasing individual client pcs, but work on the server for rollouts.

Whew...that is a mouthful. Guess I am a rabble rouser like Missy said.

Actually, I was surprised it still existed. I enjoyed great success with
it back in the days of NT 4 and early W2K. Didn't hear about the
worm.... shame that happened.

BlackICE Defender firewall?

I didn't know anyone on campus was still even using that product,
especially after that nasty worm 3-4 years ago that crippled many
systems protected by it (UofM comes to mind). I can't say that I'm
disappointed to hear that it's at EOL.
