As an admin in a previous "life," I was responsible for maintaining about 100 Optiplex GX260s (which shipped with WinXP or XPSP1) and 270s (XPSP1 and XPSP2). I recall there was some special problem with detection of the NIC that the resource disc handily addressed. I would see this problem with every machine I re-imaged. 

I apologize for being unable to help you directly, but I assure you the complication you're having with the 3c905 has been experienced by others.

Is this 3c509 an add-on PCI card?  Because the Dell Optiplex GX260 ships with an integrated 1ntel(R) PRO/1000 MT NIC.
