I had problems recently with
Windows Update after doing a repair install. You might be having a similar
problem.

Subject: [MSUNAG] Windows Update Not Updating
Windows Gurus:
I’ve got the strangest problem. I’m trying to install
Windows XP Pro (MSU’s Select) onto a Thinkpad/Lenovo T23 (P3 notebook from a
few years back). It installs fine. Immediately after install, I
visit Windows Update and do all criticals, and repeat the visit three times
till it tells me there are no more criticals remaining.
But there are. I’ve got IE6 still, no IE7, and I’ve
got no support for WPA. When I try to connect via wireless, I can connect
to MSU because it is just WEP, but on any AP with WPA2, I am unable to
connect. A quick look at the wireless options shows this computer doesn’t
know about WPA. Nothing appears out of the ordinary: all hardware
has recognized drivers; there are no relevant errors in the logs; I get no
errors from the system or from Microsoft Update. I’ve formatted and
reinstalled twice, each with different copies of our XP Select CD from
MSU. About-Help confirms it has SP2 (which is already part of our
installation CD).
Any ideas? Coming up with search terms for this
problem is proving difficult. There is one M$ KB article (907380) that
describes the problem, but it is irrelevant as it blames an Office install and
I’ve installed nothing but XP and updates.
Thanks
