Someone at the IT exchange suggested that we simply require students to register a valid e-mail account with the university, I'd have to imagine many of them simply forward their {pilot} accounts to somewhere else anyway. I agree. IMHO, the important things are (1) to place the onus on each student to ensure the account stays open/register changes with the U, and (2) to ensure that confidential information doesn't wind up in e-mail (which should be a no-brainer anyway). On this second point, for example, messages from my academic counsellors in Telecom would go through the Registrar's Office. I would receive an e-mail with a link to the RO, and was expected to log in through Sentinel to retrieve the message. If this is an example of standard operating procedure where sensitive student information is concerned, then perhaps this would be a plausible solution for reducing the e-mail load? There is an interesting distinction made between web-access and non-web (pop3) access to the google solution. Basically it sounds like we would have to "give" our passwords to google to make the non- web based solution work (you can navigate through the remainder of the thread, I'm just linking the OP). http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0710&L=hied- emailadmin&T=0&F=&S=&P=758 -- Matt Kolb <[log in to unmask]> Academic Computing & Network Services Michigan State University
