I have had this problem with several machines back when I used VNC to
connect.  Once I connected with VNC, the only way to connect with remote
desktop was to reboot the machine.  (Or maybe it was vice versa.)  Anyway,
the problem ended up being that they shared the same hooks.  Once one took
over the hooks, it wouldn't release them.

Are you using any other software that could be used for remote connections?
