In my experience, the "magic" fix for 50% of all Windows OS problems is
to reboot. The "magic" fix for 75% of all Word problems that are
document-specific (as opposed to Word not starting, say) is to Select
All, Copy to clipboard, Open New Document, Paste, then Save As new
filename. Open new document and VOILA! Problem solved. Give it a try
and let us know your results.

Subject: [MSUNAG] MS Word 2003 spell check bug

Hello Network Admins.
Yesterday I discovered that some Word 2003 files will cause Word
2003 to abort (a sudden shut down of Word without closing or saving any
of its open files) immediately after opening the file. This happens
only if the "check spelling as you type" option is turned on. These
files are Grant applications with several tables and pictures with
graphic symbols attached etc. They have some very high resolution
pictures inserted. If you turn off the spelling check as you type
option you can open and edit the files with no problem. If you reduce
the resolution of the pictures or eliminate them the document will stay
open longer but will still occasionally shut down. I believe my
computers are up to date with all current patches. The problems have
been duplicated with 3 different computers with 3 different grant
application files.
The same exact files will open successfully in OpenOffice Writer
2.0.3. If I delete the very large embedded picture (40"x66") and
resave it back in Word.doc format, it will open successfully in Word2003

with the spell checker turned on.
If you are interested I can send you a copy of one of the problem
files as an example.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or seen a report of this
problem?
Cliff
