(as Exchange announces 8bitmime support) but when Exchange forwards
that email on (in our case to a postfix server) it doesn't notice
that the remote server will accept 8bitmime formatted and so
refuses to deliver it.."

*surprise* .. Exchange is the system causing the problem in this case.
