Maybe the problem is with the update mechanism.  I'd try upgrading from 
Windows Update to Microsoft Update if you haven't already -- After 
selecting "Windows Update" from the IE Tools menu select "Upgrade to 
Microsoft Update..".  I think you can also download the tool and run it 
manually.

The malicious software removal tool is monthly and cumulative.  So if 
you can't get Aug to work then maybe you can catch up on removals with 
Sept's release.
