T-mobile blackberry 7290 with the "web-configurable" email service talks to mail. Msu. Edu just fine. Plus its a decent phone with bluetooth, and can use (albiet slow) gprs via usb to your laptop for real connectivity. It doesn't beat my verizon 5220 pcmcia evdo card (in evdo cities - whiich lansing and detroit are not)

Watch out for the typos on the bb keyboard. Composing this email on a bb qwerty kbd is pretty fast.

Subject: Re: [MSUNAG] Wireless Phone / PDA Provider Combination to Access MSU mail while away on business

I have two users in my department that use the LifeDrive by Palm
It doesn't have a phone but it does have built in Wi-fi that's seamless and
it also has
Bluetooth.

They decided not to subscribe to any plans - they just pay for wi-fi access
when
available and get reimbursed by the university or use free wi-fi access
points when
available.

As for pop email - we decided not to set it up in Versamail(the palm email
software)
and allow them instead to access their email through www.mail.msu.edu
because we didn't
want the extra delay in downloading it into Versamail - it was quicker just
to view
the email through the palm web browser on the www.mail.msu.edu site - which
is readible and
Not bad.

What's nice about it also is that it can easily be used to synch their files
on the
server here on Campus - just like you synch the calendar, contacts...
Basically you
can use it like a giant 4GB USB drive which is nice.

Bottom line - With the additional keyboard I think it's the first Palm that
I've
seen that can REALLY replace a laptop - but I think Palm erred in not
including a
phone - otherwise it would have been close to perfect.

mail while away on business

Does anybody out there have users that use a wireless phone / PDA combo to
directly access MSU mail pop server through an email client on the PDA when
they are out of the office?

If so, what provider do they use?
Do you have Plan / Price Information?
What Phone - PDA do they use?

I am trying to avoid any remote syncing / solutions where I have to leave
the users desktop up when they are on travel.

Thanks,

Lee
