Despite several years of work to reduce use of SSNs in University systems, there is still work left to do. Most "visible" uses of SSNs have been eliminated at MSU, but it is very likely that a variety of centrally- and unit-administered systems still use the SSN at "deep" levels. Primarily as a result of the most-recent security incident, LCT and the Controller's Office are working to update the inventory of such systems. The updated inventory will be used to recalibrate our sense of the degree of effort and investment involved in making further progress and also to help us gauge to what extent planned system upgrades and replacements will further this work. As we move forward towards the goal of minimizing the use of the SSN across university systems, we anticipate that units across campus will be engaged in the effort. At this juncture, however, the process has not been fully defined. I'd be glad to attend an upcoming NAG meeting to discuss this issue further.
