I recently integrated a Samba 3.0.9 server running on Debian Stable with a Windows 2000 Active Directory. I followed the exact directions that you had in your initial post and they worked perfectly. Just make sure you have the latest version of Samba, because I was having some problems with version 3.0.8 that were documented in this bug: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1717 After upgrading to the latest version all of the problems were fixed.
