You don't really say just how you're trying to send this out.  One possibility is that whatever client you are using to talk to MSU's SMTP does not support SSL connections, which are required by mail.msu.edu.  I ran into this problem using ColdFusion's mailer feature on my web server.  The only solution I came up with (after some discussion of the issue here on NAG) was to run my own SMTP server and send the mail through that.  I'm not thrilled about having to run yet another mostly unnecessary server process.
