Eudora version 6.1.1 was released on the 17th of this month, and from about 2 minutes of testing I found that it will actually send messages through Mail.msu.edu. Please note that I didn't do anything more in depth than simply send a mail message to a non-MSU mail account, so if you had other problems with the software you might want to check those out yourselves.
