We've heard from folks at NAG that before we send out a mass mailing
you'd like a heads-up. The Computer Lab plans to send an e-mail
to Deans, Directors and Chairs on Monday 1/26/04, followed by an
e-mail to all Pilot users who have not upgraded on Tuesday 1/27/04.

We expect to send at least two more mailings to those users who
haven't upgraded, about 30 days before the March 23 Pilot shutdown,
and about 1 week before shutdown.

We will monitor the pace of upgrades over these next several
weeks and may adjust strategy as needed. Also, the mail team
is looking into producing a report number of active Pilot accounts
that haven't been upgraded, broken down by department.

It would be helpful to know if computer support folks have
plans for upgrading a number of users and their desktop
clients at any particular time betweeen now and March 23.
(Of course, sooner is better than later!) Do you have a
sense of how many folks are left to convert in your area?

Some special mailboxes to think about include:

-- Those belonging to deans, associate deans, chairs, managers,
directors, etc.

-- Generic mailboxes e.g. for a department.

-- Mailboxes that forward to other mail services; e.g., a faculty
member set up forwarding from Pilot to a departmental mailbox
years ago, and doesn't realize that an upgrade is still necessary.

Below is the text for the message to all folks still using Pilot.

You can see the pace of upgrading at: http://mail.msu.edu/status/

Subject: MSU Pilot Email service is ending on March 23, 2004

The Pilot e-mail system is being removed from service and ALL users
must upgrade to mail.msu.edu before March 23, 2004 in order to continue
using their MSU e-mail account.

You must upgrade whether you currently use the TWIG web interface, a
telnet client, or a desktop e-mail client - such as Eudora or Outlook.
Even if you are just forwarding your mail from Pilot to another e-mail
address, you must upgrade to the new system.

Steps to take:

1) If you are faculty or staff, check with your departmental computer
support
   staff before upgrading your account.

2) Go to https://mail.msu.edu/upgrade and follow the instructions.

Please note:

- When you upgrade to mail.msu.edu, your MSU NetID (sometimes called
your Pilot ID) will not change, and your password will not change.

- After you upgrade, mail sent to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]
will be delivered to your new account on mail.msu.edu.

- For security reasons, mail.msu.edu does not support telnet access but
has a secure, fast, and easy-to-use web interface.

- If you take no action your e-mail account will be removed on March 23.

desk consultant at 517-432-6200.
