Due to the effects of Blaster and Welchia worms, restrictions have been placed on the ability to issue ICMP requests, affecting use of the "ping" tool. Inbound ICMP request from off campus are blocked at the border. Gigabit-attached academic buildings should be able to ping other academic buildings. FDDI-attached buildings cannot ping from inside the building out; they cannot get past the building router. (In this case worm ICMP requests were crashing the routers.) ICMP requests from residence halls going anywhere are blocked. No word yet on when or if there might be changes. /rich
